04.08.2013 Reykjavik – Solheimatunga, IS

I really slept well again last night and fantastically rested I went for breakfast at 10 am, where the best buffet so far in Iceland was awaiting me. Since Maflor had highly recommended the thermal bath in Nautholsvik, I skipped my morning shower, packed my belongings and said goodbye to the pleasant staff shortly before noon - this hotel is a true gem in the middle of the city of Reykjavik!

Nautholsvik

Nautholsvik

A few minutes later I arrived at Nautholsvik, outside it was only 10 centigrade, since yesterday it was still overcast and the wind blew harder than the last 2 days – so a bath in the 38° C warm thermal water was but a treat! People swim here in the sea all year round as it never drops below 20 centigrade with its thermal water supply. The complex also features a spacious shower area, so after all I hit the roads happily and clean like never before... ; )

For a short time I was driving along the ring road on the south coast direction east and soon after branched off on side roads along the most notorious and most active volcano of Iceland: Hekla (1491m). Finally I could drive gravel roads again - I had already missed them! Also the weather was on my side again: The sun came out more and more and soon it was 18 centigrade. When I was right next to the Hekla, my thermometer showed even 22 centigrade - if that was because of its emission?

Back on the ring road along the coast I reached Landeykahöfn at 4 pm, where the ferry leaves to the Westman Islands. But as everybody already had warned me, I got confirmed there that all ferries were fully booked for the next few days because of a big festival...

So I drove further direction east and an hour later Oarrived at Cape Dyrholaey. There were not only bizarre rock formations to marvel at but yet again thousands of puffins!

Since it was already 6 pm and I wanted to stay in this area (as there are hotels and restaurants), I began to search for a place to stay. After I had looked in vain for a room for two hours within a radius of 30 km, I gave up and sat down to have dinner at the cozy restaurant Sudur-Vik in Vik i Myrdal, the small southernmost village of Iceland. I first had myself treated to some fine food and thereafter sat in the lobby to work on my blog. Meanwhile tons of people took turns all waiting for a table - no wonder the food was outstanding! At 11 pm Agnes, the waiter, with the good news that she finally had found an accommodation for me at the Solheimahjaleiga Guesthouse in Solheimatunga (http://solheimahjaleiga.is) after she had dialed her fingers to the bone...

03.08.2013 Keflavik - Reykjavik, IS

03.08.2013 Keflavik - Reykjavik, IS

Last night, since a long time ago, I slept my optimal 9 hours for once – this did a world of good! The same did my jogging on the sidewalk along the coast and the harbour of Keflavik, although or perhaps because of the strong wind, which almost blew me off the track! When I was back at the hotel an hour later, I had a big breakfast and thereafter took my time, as always, and was ready for departure at noon.

Half an hour later I arrived already at one of the main attractions of Iceland, the Blue Lagoon. But since I did not feel like splashing around with the big mass (it was weekend and because of a national holiday also a long one!), I only made a quick photo stop...

Further I drove the roads along the coast and reached Reykjavik by 2 pm. My first stop was the Perlan, a futuristic glass dome atop of six hot water tanks, from the terrace I was enjoying a panorama of the city of Reykjavik. Then I followed as always my nose and my instinct which guided me right to the center, where I found my ideal car park in no time. I strolled through the shopping streets and it reminded me a bit of Gamla Stan Stockholm... There were actually no old buildings to see and I soon realized that Reykjavik is a young city with young people.

Thulin

In the tobacco shop Bjork I soon began to philosophize with Thulin... about the sense and nonsense of bans... for example, here in Iceland no 'healthy' cigarettes (i.e. without additives - only pure tobacco) are imported, because it could encourage people to smoke! But those who smoke do it anyway!!! And, will you not become sick of the additives rather than of the pure nature (as in food!)??? - Gosh, how sick is this world!

Maflor, Hotel 4th Floor, Reykjavik

So far I had, as usual, no idea how my day would end, but I liked this city, so I decided to look for a place to stay overnight, which I found soon afterwards in the 4th Floor Hotel (http://www.4thfloorhotel found. is). The charming and helpful Maflor, the new, modern and sylish furnished rooms (wood and animal print), a car park around the corner, WiFi and just a jump away from the pedestrian precinct convinced me within a few seconds...

Restaurant Saegreiginn / Sea Baron, Reykjavik

Restaurant Saegreiginn / Sea Baron, Reykjavik

After I had unpacked everything and thereafter put back in my suitcase – just to know what (still clean) stuff I got - I started my walk through the city at 7 pm and arrived half an hour later at the restaurant Saegreiginn / Sea Baron at the harbor, which Maflor had recommended to me. It really is a very special restaurant: You order at the counter (everything is visible in the display case), pay, get a number and then sit down wherever you find place. So I sat at a table with 6 persons from Wales UK, Canada and Australia. In addition to the interesting conversations I enjoyed a lobster soup as well as a sole and a vegetable kebab - which was brought to the table.

Before returning to the hotel, I went to the Micro Bar (Arni’s bar, who I had met in Isafjördur) with Aileen and Andrée, but except of beers there actually were other drinks! ; ) Arni also owns a small, more precisely a micro, beer brewery here in Iceland. (Arni: What a pitty you weren't there!)

02.08.2013 Selfoss - Keflavik, IS

Also this morning I woke up shortly before 8 am and again the sun flashed at me in front of a glorious blue sky when I pushed back the curtains. The breakfast, which was served in a basket, was rather poor, so I drove to the bakery, bought fresh rolls and even drank two double espressos - the coffee was that good there! : )

In my ‘apartment’ I now had time to cook tea, to look for the most beautiful golf courses in the area and determine the route for today... For once really early, already at 10 am, I was ready for the onward journey, but first stopped at the supermarket to stock up my essentials... Thereafter I hit the roads towards the west along the south coast of the Reykjanes Peninsula.

I stopped in a fantastic lava landscape by the sea in Herdisarvik to have breakfast in the sun – something different for once! Further I drove along the west coast of the peninsula, where I could admire the gap of the Eurasian and North American plates, which constantly drift apart with great force...

Shortly before 2 pm I reached the golf course Sudurnesja, in the utmost southwest of the peninsula, and drove off with Dröfn & Siggi soon after. This is a golf course to my taste: A breathtaking panorama let me play very well – 3 par and at least as many bogeys, in spite of the strong winds! In addition, I had very nice companions, unfortunately only for 9 holes. : (

Aussicht von meinem Zimmer / view from my room, Hotel Keilir, Keflavik

At 6 pm when I had finished the 18 holes, I drove back 10 km to the hotel Keilir (http://www.airporthotel.is) in Keflavik, where the nice guy at the clubhouse had booked me a room after several attempts at different hotels. Thankfully I moved into the lovely room of the likeable owners Bryndis and Ragnar who blessed me with many valuable tips.

Then I strolled through the little town and finally went for dinner at the Kaffi Duus at 7:30 pm - on recommendation of Bryndis - where I enjoyed a delicious fish overlooking the small harbor... Instead of returning directly to the hotel, it was only 9 pm, I took a short drive to the lighthouse of Gardskagi. Very, very tired I got back at the hotel soon after and was looking forward to my bed.
